“不到长城非好汉”已经成了旅游者的一句名言。今天，我们来到了位于北京北部延庆县境内的八达岭长城游玩,想登上长城，亲眼看一看这一雄伟的历史丰碑，实现我的“好汉梦”。这一带山峦起伏，多险峰峻岭，离北京市区70多公里。

我本来是想爬上长城的，但不巧的是下起大雨来了，我们只好坐滑车上山了。乘上滑车，就依着长城脚慢吞吞地向上行驶，仿佛是一条穿梭在森林中的巨蜥，掠过一个个路障向前行进。

走下滑车，我们已经站在长城的峰火台口，由于游览人太多，我拼命地往上挤。我挤出洞口向四周眺望，长城像一条巨龙横卧在连绵起伏的群山上，真是雄伟啊!据介绍城墙的基部全部用花岗岩条石筑成，城墙高8.5米(平均高度为7.8米)，下宽为6.5米，上宽是5.7米，可以五马并行。城上两旁有矮墙，名叫宇墙，外侧的墙又叫堞墙，高1.7米，上面有垛口，是巡逻放哨了望用的。垛口下面为射击孔，是射箭用的。内侧宇墙，高1米。在城墙内则，每隔一段距离有券门，门内有石阶可以登城。城上每隔300-500米，就有一处城台。听导游介绍，烽火台上如发现敌情，白天燃烟，夜间举火，远处的墩台发现烟火，也立即点燃烟火，逐个相传，能较快地传到指挥机关。这是古代通讯联络方式之一。

有人曾经对长城作过粗略计算，如果把长城的砖石用来修筑一条一米宽，五米高的墙，那么可环绕地球一周。中国的万里长城不愧是当今世界上最长的防御城墙。

万里长城是公元前7世纪开始修建的。它东起渤海湾的山海关，经河北、北京、山西、陕西、内蒙古、宁夏到甘肃的嘉峪关，穿过崇山峻岭，山涧峡谷，绵延起伏，长约12000多华里，因而名为万里长城。我们无不为先民的伟大气魄和坚毅精神所感动。
